Riga is the capital city of Latvia which is a country in the Baltic region of Northern Europe. It is bordered to the north by Estonia, to the south by Lithuania, to the east by Russia, and to the southeast by Belarus and by a maritime border to the west with Sweden. Riga is set on the Baltic Sea at the mouth of the River Daugava and is a cultural center with museums and concert halls known for its wooden buildings, medieval Old Town and art nouveau architecture.
There is much to see and do in Riga including visits to St Peters Church, the Art Nouveau museum and Riga cathedral which is the largest place of worship in the Baltics with walls two metres thick. Riga Cathedral also has one of the biggest organs in Europe and it was such a marvel in its day that Franz Liszt composed a piece of music in its honour. The drop from Cathedral Square (Doma laukums) to the church's base shows how the level of the city has risen in the 800 years since its foundations were laid on the site of a Livonian fishing village.
